Alien Earth Episode 5 “In Space, No One” - Review

Alien earth ep 5 still 3

Gore, guts, and the guarantee of an episode that will make you swear off water bottles forever.

We rewind to the beginning, joining Morrow (Babou Ceesay) and his crew before the ship crash that kicked off the series. What follows is a slow-burn, pressure-cooker of tension that feels like it could blow at any moment. For the fifth episode in a row, Ceesay acts his heart out — intense, authoritative, intriguing, and, frankly, just downright cool.

It's revealed that Morrow is only partly machine, finally clarifying his earlier riddle: "When is a machine not a machine?" We also learn of his daughter, who tragically died during their voyage - the origin story of this "evil daycare daddy of death and destruction." Once again, a single character is placed in the spotlight, and Ceesay makes the most of it. He is as compelling as he is intense; the man is a unit.

In some ways, Hawley and his team are essentially remaking Alien (1979) - though with a twist. Think South Park's criticism of J.J. Abrams for remaking A New Hope (1977) as The Force Awakens (2015): valid, yes, but still entertaining. This episode taps into the nostalgia of what made Alien beloved while ramping up the stakes so high the crew barely has room to breathe.

The eyeball alien once again steals the show. Equal parts creepy and weirdly cute, it even has a moment of charm when it tries to warn Science Officer Chibuzo (Karen Aldridge) of imminent danger. Then, of course, it commits perhaps the grimmest act ever involving a water bottle on television. I found myself rooting for the little thing - until it started drilling into eye sockets with Spider-Man-like agility.

From there, the carnage escalates. Each crewmember dies in a more gruesome way than the last. We even get a triple kill from one species - Mum, get the camera! Bloodsucking, lung-lining, oesophagus-latching bugs? Check. An eyeball critter darting around like Spidey and burrowing into skulls like an evil Usyk? Yup. A feral Xenomorph variant so vicious the UK Government would ban it? Absolutely. The episode is a gory joyride, full of surprises, and the practical suit work - though clearly a bloke in a suit - makes it all the more fun to watch.

We also finally learn what led to Morrow's confrontation with Mother in the command room, and why he abandoned Zaveri (Richa Moorjani) to her fate. Her death is brutal, torn apart like a bag of chips left to seagulls in Skegness. Truly vicious and rude. (And yes, why are seagulls so invasive?) The episode closes with a lingering sense of dread, as the Xenomorph - not yet fully returned - makes its presence known again.

The cinematography is a standout this week, with stellar visuals in nearly every scene. Some shots are so striking even Morrow seems impressed as he watches them on the monitors. Props to Hawley and his team — this one felt cinematic from the opening mess hall scene, which perfectly mirrored the doomed crew of the Nostromo. Cue the film bros shouting about "member berries" - brace yourselves.

"In Space, No One" delivers a thrilling, blood-soaked entry filled with tension, terror, and tastefully executed homages to the original. Something big is brewing, and as we prepare to rejoin the young Avengers back on Earth next week, it feels like the ride is only just beginning.
