The acclaimed In Search of Darkness documentary series is heading back to one of horror's most influential decades, with the announcement of In Search of Darkness '70s. And in keeping with the franchise's community-driven ethos, fans are being invited to help shape the project from the ground up.
CREATORVC, the team behind the fan-favourite series, has opened the door for horror enthusiasts to contribute their ideas and preferences via a newly launched survey. Participants will not only influence the documentary's format and content, but also have a say in exclusive physical releases and collectible merchandise tied to the project.
Following their extensive exploration of 1980s and 1990s horror across five long-form documentaries spanning more than 25 hours and earning nominations from both the Fangoria Chainsaw and Rondo Hatton awards - the creators are now turning their attention to the groundbreaking cinema of the 1970s.
The decade is widely regarded as a golden era for horror, producing genre-defining films such as The Exorcist, The Omen, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, Jaws, Carrie, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Suspiria, Phantasm, and Alien. In Search of Darkness '70s aims to revisit these iconic titles while also uncovering lesser-known gems that helped shape the genre's evolution.
Fans are encouraged to read the official synopsis and complete the survey to share their thoughts, with participation open until April 30, 2026. The initiative reflects CREATORVC's ongoing commitment to fan-inclusive storytelling, ensuring the audience plays a meaningful role in the creative process.
Writer and director David Weiner shared his excitement about returning to the era that first sparked his love of horror:
"I am truly excited to return to my horror roots for In Search of Darkness '70s, and to once again invite our passionate audience to share their ideas and favourite genre films to help shape our next CREATORVC documentary. Growing up as a 'Monster Kid' in that golden decade, I have so many formative memories of watching horror movies and late-night creature features. I can't wait to combine that nostalgia with a fresh re-contextualisation of this amazing time in horror history."
Executive Producer Robin Block highlighted how the new instalment represents a major evolution for the series:
"In Search of Darkness '70s represents the most significant evolution of the series we've undertaken so far. We've listened closely to our audience and are pushing further—not just creatively, but in how we deliver value to collectors. This includes a more premium Blu-ray offering alongside an 80-page companion book, designed to create a richer, more immersive experience for fans."
The documentary will return to the series' signature long-form structure, exploring the decade year-by-year from 1970 to 1979. Through exclusive interviews with filmmakers, actors, critics, and fans, it promises a detailed and insightful look at one of the most revolutionary periods in horror cinema.
Pre-orders for In Search of Darkness '70s are set to launch in May 2026.
